I strongly recommend you learn the Northern dialect first for basic and then the Southern one from your bf’s parents. The grammar is basically the same but there are two main differences: naturally the pronunciation and the way to describe/express the thought. The Vietnamese have a saying "The North has the literature, the Central has the arts of war and the South has music". Great Vietnamese writers are mostly Northerners. Contact http://www.vps.org for the language software.

The Northern Vietnamese Dialect is actually the correct pronunciation. The language is still the same unlike different Chinese dialects. Southern dialect will use "Y" sounds to replace words that begin with "V". For eg. "Di Vay" would sound just like how it’s spelled for Northern whereas in Southern dialect, it would sound like "Di Yay." There are others that I can’t think of but ultimately, the real differences is the sounding of only a few letters.
