What do I call my mother-in-law in Vietnamese?

My wife is Vietnamese, her mother is from Vietnam. I bought my mother-in-law a Christmas present and I want to write on the card "Merry Christmas (proper Vietnamese appellation)!" What should I write?

I am Vietnamese and I also am Chinese but do both cultures but I am usually unaware of what culture I am doing, like new years, food offering, etc.

Do you think some Vietnamese look chinese.? I have pale skin and monolids with dark black hair.
Sadly, I encountered a couple of people who I thought were Chinese so I spoke to them in Chinese but they were Vietnamese. Thoroughly embarrassing, I must say. Can you please tell me about it's history, cultures, language , and similarity? I know there are a lot of Vietnamese words similar to Chinese can you list some?

& about the facial features, correct me if I am wrong, but why do people say Vietnamese have dark skin??? That is not true! It all depends on where Viets live. People further down south most likely have tanner skin becuase of the sun, but people in the cities and sometimes the North, have a majority of lighter skin. Chinese people can also have darker skin. Where I live in Vietnam, there are a LOT of Chinese/Korean people who can speak the languages.
Please do not be bashful and please give out good information

Visiting family in Vietnam..?

I'm going to Vietnam in the summer to visit my family that I've never met before. I'm half white and half Vietnamese. I'm only 13 & I don't speak the language very well.. I'm a very obnoxious girl and I don't know what they would think of me if I act like myself. I'm nervous about meeting them and what they'll think of me. My mom is going with me and she speaks te language because well, it's her family of course. But I'd like some advice of how I should communicate or act around them.. Thanks. (:

Vietnam used to write in characters, like the Chinese do waayy back when. At fist, I thought it was because of the French, but I don't know if that's right. Now, we write in letters, like I am right now. Like this: tiếng Việt. Why did it change? Please put it in a way that a 13 year old can understand. Thank you!

I bought a phone in Vietnam and I really like it, but I think it's from Taiwan and I don't want all of the Chinese language support on it. The phone doesn't really have a brand name I don't think, but the front says "MPEG4". It's got a USB port and I can use it as a storage device, so it seems like there should be a way to change the programming. Is there?
I've been looking on the net and it looks like a have a knockoff of a Nokia 8800 or something very similar to it.

Dialogue with Iran, Syria and N. Korea, Iraq turning into another Vietnam, Our Troops being let down by constant mistakes and bad descisions.

I could nearly become a Republican myself, if Hagel would succeed in getting rid of these NEOCONS in the White House.

I am a 16 year old Vietnamese-American, born in the U.S. (parents both born in Vietnam). My question what would the best way for me to learn to read, write, and speak the language. I know enough to speak about basic subjects (at home/shopping) but not adequate enough. Any books/ courses recommended? Audio preferred?

I get my nails done at a place where the women speak Vietnamese to each other. I was brought up that if you speak a language that other's don't undersestand and u can speak their language , it is rude to speak that language so others can't understand you. I want to tell them this as their culture may be different and they aren't aware of this. What do you yahoosers think?????
FYI: they speak English to me directly but they speak to each other while working on my nails in Vietnamese, so they definitely know how to speak English
smileyface2015; How the h--l can i be eavesdropping when they are working on my nails? I'm not hanging around waiting for anything, you sound as ignorant as them
Mandy: ther is no racism issue, You have no manners, for people to speak around you while they are attending to you as a customer is plain rude, racism isn't an issue here. If I can speak German , am waiting on a customer in a store, a friend walks by and I start talking to her in German while the customer is still doing a transaction with me, that is R u d e!!! not R a c i s t ! !
please do everyone on here a favor and use the dictionary once in a while
Iniaz: Because we are here, not in Vietnam DDUUUHHH?????
Mandy S; : the only thing i can excuse your over the top ignorance is you just haven't had the benefit of any education

Move to Vietnam?

I realllllllllly want to move from the USA to Vietnam, namely Hue/Da nang but I'd settle for a big city or even a smaller one. My questions are these..

1. What do I do for employment/income. I know teaching english is the popular answer but without the TEFL cert. it will be hard to find a job, let alone one that pays well enough to enjoy life.

2. Living? Apartments, houses.. whats the situation and most likely type of housing I would be able to find.

3. Language barrier. I don't speak a bit of Vietnamese.. obviously after so much time there I would pick up the language, but what to do until then?

4. Finally... I am a white boy american. How will I be treated by locals and by others there? I have visited once before and was treated very kindly but that was because I was a tourist and they wanted my money!

Thanks :)
I see you are a prick regardless of where you live. Thanks for the serious answer! I just loved the culture and have spent much time in other parts of asia but found Vietnam to be my favorite location in Asia. I have more skills in my pinky then you probably do in your body, I just don't speak the language is all. That doesn't seem to stop the 10952308 mexicans which move into my country illegaly everyday. Go jump off a cliff thanks.

my daddy wants an education. He came here from vietnam a long time ago. Even then, he wanted to enroll, but afraid he won't catch up with all those people speaking english and all that. Even so, he's been busy with me and my sister. Now I want to help him back. Can you help me?

How do you say this phrase in Vietnamese?

Hi there (: I'm trying to translate a script that my friend wrote into Vietnamese because I wanted to share it with some of the friends I made when I went to Vietnam for vacation. I'm almost done, but I'm stuck on the sentence, "Some friends you guys are.. it's disappointing, how fickle you can be." LOL. How do you say that in Vietnamese?

Thank you in advance ;D
Thank you so much!!

which the former Soviet Union fostered and believed in....and indeed.....if the USA in Vietnam actually hastened the end of a communist Soviet Union...whose nuclear missiles were always aimed at Washington DC...and the American heartland....then does this not speak highly of the legacy of our troops in Vietnam who sacrificed life and limb?

I haven't spoken to my girlfriend in a week and I miss the living life outta her :I She's in Vietnam and has no access to internet/phone! :(

What's the longest for you? Does it make you miss them more (In a hurtful or good way)?

Are Vietnamese people rude?

When I mean Vietnamese I don't mean american born or raise vietnamese or mix Vietnamese because I knew some are very nice and also I'm friends with some of them. The ones I'm talking about are the more like the ones from vietnam. I never went to Vietnam so I don't know but so far all the ones I met are so rude. Also the Vietnamese men I encounter in the past are such pervert and talk shit about their gf to other girls. I felt sorry for this one girl who got pregnant with a Vietnamese man and got treat like trash by her bf and his friends. Also I have a Vietnamese landlord and when I first move in he told me and my bf we can find a roommate to pay for the other room we weren't using but about one week after moving in he rented the room out to a middle age Vietnamese couple with out our consent. We were nice to the new roommates at first and also didn't even mind that they took our stuff out of some cabinets and replace it with theirs since we guess they need some space. But once moved in they have been constantly order us around and been stealing our stuff. Also when I was cooking the vietnamese wife turn off my fire and move my pot right in front of me and start cooking. What a rude bitch. I never met anyone so rude in my whole life. Even after we made it clear we don't want to talk to them they still trying to tell us what to do. What is wrong with these people. The husband also told my bf to clean the kitchen after they used it and my bf told them to fuck off and they said they will call the police. Man I actually lol because it was just so stupid. I know English is not their first language but come on they should know that was stupid to say. So far my experiences with vietnamese fobs haven't been good but still I hope not all of them are like the ones I met.

How are white people stereotyped in East Asia?

And if an east Asian knows no white peroson language except the names of places and people, what do they think the languages sound like? Please no answers from Mainland China, North Korea, laos, or Vietnam because those countries are totalitarianist.

I had come to US for about 6 months. But till now I cant improve my speaking in English. I use to silent during the time at school. No speaking, no talking. I also was like that in my old country. I don't know what to talk about with my classmates, my friends at school. And that's the reason I dont have much foreign friends to improve in Speaking English. What can I do to make friends and improve my English? Actually I just have friends who are from Vietnam, my old country too. but they dont like to speak English and I wanted to separate the Vietnamese group. but before that I need to have foreign friends. They are so hard to close, they were refuse to keep talking with me when I didnt understand. hic plz help me?

What do you have to say about Walter Cronkite?

I think with the loss of Walter or (Uncle Walter/Uncle Walt) Peter Jennings, Dan Rather, and so many more the grip of true journalism is gone or do you think today's news still honors the code of journalism especially trying to deliver an unbiased news story.
Granted Walter eventually spoke out against Vietnam but he always tried to stay unbiased and deliver the news as it was.
What do you have to say about Walter Cronkite?
What about today's news?
Rest in Peace Walter.

we found it inscribed on some sort of ancient vase (we think) & we're just wondering what language it's written in so we can figure out what it is. it was given to us a few decades ago by a family friend who purchased it from Vietnam.

I tried to sketch it out the best I could: http://i56.tinypic.com/23hswhe.jpg

thanks in advance! your help is greatly appreciated! (:

I have this friend named Steve and he always insults me simon cowell style whenever I talk about my upcoming marriage to this vietnamese girl. Everytime when I say I'm excited to go meet this vietnamese girl in vietnam who my aunt is introducing me to, he says you should be excited about your upcoming divorce. He says your a big sissy who can't get a girl so you get your momma to get you a girl, no girl wants to be with a guy like that. He also says you will cry so much when she leaves you that you will drown and sink like a ship. I told him that this is normal in the vietnamese culture and most girls from vietnam are faithful and they stay married with you no matter what income you make, low or high. I told him that vietnamese girls in vietnam are taught by their parents to get married once only. He says you're better off becoming a prostitute or a hooker because they make good money and all you want from this vietnamese girl is sex and nothing else. This is true and I'm wondering why he insults me like this ?? I know he is copying simon cowell's style of insults.

Should I learn Thai or Vietnamese?

I have to learn a Southeast Asian language, either Thai or Vietnamese. There seems to be more Vietnamese people in my area (the US) and around the world in general, and the language has a simpler writing system. Thai however looks and sounds more beautiful to me (that is of course subjective), and the country is more developed than Vietnam. Difficulty isn't really an issue for me, I'm a translator already. I'm more interested in usefulness and perks of knowing either language I may not be aware of (rich literary tradition, openness of people to foreigners learning the language etc). So with the question of difficulty aside, which would you recommend and why? Which do you think is more useful to learn? Funner to learn? Thanks!!

Such as Japan, Thailand, SIngapore and Vietnam, where people don't speak Korean?

In Viet Nam <---this is how the way we write doesn't matter in English or in Viet, but everytimes my teacher and other people keep write Vietnam at one word. Viet mean Vietnamese people and Nam mean South they are completely different meaning.

I am 12 years old and I think I have a pretty good shot at becoming a model in Vietnam, I travel between Vietnam and texas quite often, I am 58 inches tall,My waist is 24 in. my hips are 27 in. I stay in Nha Trang Most of the time, I have brown hair and eyes... I weigh 70 lbs. my hair is to my chest.

I speak english and vietnamese i can read in viet and read n write in english.

I don't know if i'm qualified for it or not... do i need to grow, lose weight gain weight...or what?

in a 1- 10 scale what are my chances?
It won't interfere with my education, i plan to go to college and be a game developer for jagex.

I know a girl who moved to the US from Vietnam to study abroad. I think it would help her to have others in a similar situation to talk to. If you know of any online groups for Vietnamese or even just Asian teenagers, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it! =]

I'd just like to know how well the International students from China or Vietnam know English when they come to America to go to college? Are they able to have a comfortable conversation with someone who is very fluent in English? Don't all international students have to take a language test before they can attend an American university? Does this language test just test the basics of the English language? I'd really like to know. Thanks!

Incidentally, Which one is considered more useful or helpful ?
So far, I haven't got to learn either of them, & I've never been to Thailand or Vietnam.

I'm 17 years old, American girl, working hard my senior year...

My dream has always been to teach english in Vietnam, Japan, or some other Asian country. I love learning foreign languages and about the culture of different countries. Are there any programs that could help me get a job doing this?

Thank you!
