What do I need to know before living in Vietnam?

I will being studying in Hanoi University for five months starting in August. I've been to Vietnam several times, but never longer than a month and I have only been in the south. Also, as a Vietnamese born and raised in America, will people in Vietnam treat me differently? And will they look down on me for my sub par Viet language skills? I would love to make as many Vietnamese friends as possible! Not only that, is there a way I can communicate with other expats living in Hanoi?

I was in Vietnam, I will lead you

nice to meet you

I am getting my 6 month American Welding Association certificate, and I would like to work abroad in Vietnam as a welder. And I know little vietnamese language.

My cousin from Vietnam ,that I met 4 years ago, got a facebook and he's been speaking broken English. I kinda want to communicate in Vietnamese since I can understand Vietnamese but I can speak it... I know I have to say something like "em" referring to myself. So how do I say "I'm good?" Goggle translate didn't help.

Am i Chinese or Vietnamese ?

my parents were born in Vietnam and was raised in Vietnam and then moved to Canada and my mom was adopted in Vietnam but they both speak Cantonese does that make me Chinese or Vietnamese

I'm Vietnamese and of course my parents run nail shops. A lot of people I ask think they talk about you in our language, however that's not really true. Does this offend you? People have to also understand that most of the people that work in the salons, (if not all) came from Vietnam so their English is not that good, which is why they are usually quiet when they do your nails and talk to each other to make way with the boredom/awkwardness.

I know that many businesses want to buy direct from China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, etc in the Far East. However problems they face will be language, and trust. I operate from Singapore with connections in above areas and can handle your purchases sales safely wth quality checks. We can also handle repacking and distribution. We have good financial controls in Singapore. We are small but can get you connected. We will charge a small commision. Wondering which website will be the best place to advertize. We

Hi everyone,

What are they saying (in Vietnamese)?

Okay, in the movie Platoon, there's a part where the American soldiers ransack this village and they're shouting stuff that I guess is in Vietnamese at these poor villagers... I am wondering what it is they're saying. If you've seen the movie then you'll know what I'm talking about.

One part is where there's some people hiding in this sort of hole thing underground and the soldiers are saying, "La dai" or like "La dai moi" (it sounds like "la die mao") at them to get them to come out. And then there's another part where Barnes is trying to get this one older guy to talk and he gets the guy's daughter and acts like he's going to shoot her and says something like, "I cacadou! I cacadou vee cee!" What the heck does that mean?? I spelled it that way because somebody else wrote it like that on a blog or something so it might be misspelled.

I tried to find the clip on Youtube but it's split into two different clips, and they might take awhile to load so I don't know if anybody wants to take the time but just in case, here they are:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oNM0Ma-SNY&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFmL8oOKl5I&feature=related

WARNING... this is a really disturbing part of the movie so keep that in mind if you decide to watch it.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
You mean to tell me there's NOBODY HERE WHO WAS IN VIETNAM??? Come on, somebody's got to know.

Travelling to Vietnam, tips please?

In April this year I'm traveling over to Vietnam to see my Dad who works there, I'm 15 by the way if that helps. Was just wondering about things i should know about going over there, do they speak much English over there? (I'm Australian) and what are some things you recommend doing over there, apart from shopping of course! I'll be on my own a lot as my Dad will be working most in the days and its only me going to visit him. So any tips and help would be much appreciated, also any tips on some basic language I should learn would be helpful
Thanks xxx.
if it helps in staying in Ho Chi Minh city

Dating a Vietnamese guy…please help. :O?

So I met my boyfriend online, we've been dating almost a year, and we talk on the phone or webcam almost every day. He moved here with his family from Vietnam when he was 7. His parents are in their 60's, and they can barely speak any English. They did NOT want him dating a girl outside his race, and when they found out he was dating a white girl, they gave him so much hell about it that we had to break up. They kept telling him that I was just using him, I was going to boss him around, I only wanted him for his money, etc. :/
We got back together 11 months ago, and we really love each other...his family has started to accept me, and they want to meet me. I'm so nervous though. My boyfriend says that they will accept me one day as long as I adjust to their culture, and I'm willing to do anything to be with him, I've already started learning Vietnamese...but...someone please help me on how I should act...tell me a bit more about their culture, etc.

This sets Vietnam apart from all other Asian countries. And lots of Vietnamese are of Chinese heritage. I wonder how much trouble they had with the language upon immigration.

Is french taught to children in Vietnam?

Is french taught to children in Vietnamese schools or must people learn the language on their own? I know a young (mid-twenties) woman who came to Canada recently from Vietnam as a teacher and she speaks completely fluent french, as if she grew up with it. I heard french was dying in Vietnam. Is that true or do all kids learn it?

or language, they only use little french words and thats just because they dont have a word for it like house hold items. No one in vietnam ever try to show off that they were mix with french, those acutally mixed, will get people to make fun of them

while filipinos they were colonized by the spanish, and now everybody in filipno think/or hope to be mixed with spain. and glorify that they grandpa/grandma was white so they 1 quarter white

im viet and i love the lanuage of those countries. do you think it will take me long to learn them. i heard chinese controlled vietnam for 1000 years so will the lanuage be similar to china or at least will i be able to pronounce it well??

Do you know there are more Vietnamese native speakers (people who speak Vietnamese as their mother tongue) than there are French, German or Italian native speakers? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_number_of_native_speakers

Do you also know Vietnam is larger than Great Britain, Italy and Korea (North and South Korea combined)? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_outlying_territories_by_total_area

Do you know that there are more Vietnamese than there are Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans , Italians or Koreans? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population

So why are many people (including many Vietnamese) still referring to Vietnam as a tiny country when it's bigger and more populated than many major world powers? Are they ill-informed (for most non-Vietnamese) or having an inferiority complex (for most Vietnamese) or both?

For some weird reason my crazy bi polar nephew does this when he gets lonely and he would dress up as a girl from head to toe. He would wear heels and dresses and a wig and lip stick and make up and I just don't understand why he does that when he wants to get married to that vietnamese girl from vietnam who he always talk about. He does not go out in public dressed like a girl but he walks around his neighboorhood in san jose like this. He tries so hard to look like a girl he makes himself look so hideous. What is wrong with him ?? Is he also gay too ?

How do you say "silver" in different language?

I know there're quite many generous native speakers from different cultures here. So plz help this poor girl xD.
Thanks in advance, guys.
I want to know as many as possible.
From vietnam with love.
P/s don't tell me use google trans. Thanks a bunch.

Hi! My boyfriend and his family is from Vietnam, I am going to be meeting his parents in December and I want to be able to have a little conversation with them since his mom does not speak English and his dad is not very fluent. My boyfriend gave me some CD's and a book which are helpful but I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions for software, books, etc. that will help me. I am having a little trouble pronouncing and with the marks over and under the letters... :S. Thank you in advance.

Do you prefer Vietnam or Japan?

I'm Vietnamese, but so many of my Vietnamese friends would rather be something they're not, like (esp.Japanese), Korean, Chinese, etc. They also don't know the vietnamese language and culture really well, but would rather learn something else. I like to get into my own Vietnamese culture and get the best out of it, and I feel that you should learn about yourself, before learning of others. However, people tell me I'm weird and that Vietnam sucks. I don't think it sucks, and I want Vietnam to become a better country. It's kinda annoying , so why would they dislike their own roots like that, instead of trying to see the bright side?

Vietnamese married to Indians please contact?

Hello All and Everyone,

If you are married to India (as an husband or wife) then please reply to this threat. I am moving to Vietnam and will like to make friends with you (so that our life partners can have some common ground to talk about).

I am very open to anyone who would like to be a part of this kind of community. I understand that white male and Vietnamese girl is a common bond we can see but it is not that common to see a Vietnamese girl marring Indian guy or vs.

So this is my effort in bringing this minority in touch.

Cheers and will wait for replies.
theonethatgotaway,

Your kind of people create bad impression. Wondering where are you from.
Thank you for kind reply mojavi. I will mostly be in Hanoi area, any idea in that area?

Language learning products?

Okay so I am going back to Vietnam this December after 5 years and I am Vietnamese born in the u.s. I rarely speak Vietnam at home but always speak in English so after years my vietnamese has kinda slowly going away. I can say little, like i won't remember words like sun, car or something like that but when someone talk a to me I understand them clearly and respond back in English. I was just wondering what is a good product to help me learn the language? Like something with a voice to help me hear the pronunciation of the word. Rosetta stone is very pricey! Anything affordable just give me any ideas

I really need a program with a voice! So I can hear it pronouncing it is really hard in another language

they all look the exact same. I mean seriously no offense but they look identical from china, japan, korea, hell Vietnam. I bet no one can tell them apart. can you?? If so how?

Of course I mean without hearing them speak. Not that it makes any difference to me.

I'm a native english speaker and I can speak adequite chinese and some basic vietnamese. Can I teach english in mainland china or vietnam without a college degree? If it needs a college degree, then what exactly is the teaching english as a foreign language certificate for.

I take French 11 for three days a week. Therefore, I need plans what I am going to do. When I get back from school, I must review before forgetting the new vocabulary, grammars, or expressions. According to psychiatrists, if you learnt new things indirectly, you would forget completely it less than an hour. So, the best thing to do is just reviewing the today’s lesson at lunch, home, or after school. Other options might be watching the French news on channel 7, listening to the French radio, reading French books or the French Bible. Also, you can send a letter in French to a pen pal living in a French-speaking county such as Vietnam, France, or Quebec. In addition, every Saturday, there is a French-speaking school in every city where you can participate in. But, the best way not forgetting French is to have a conversation with a friend who is in a French-immersion class. There are varieties opportunities for you not to forget French even if you take French three times a week.

a couple years ago my dad rented this war movie on vietnam from netflix. its about apachi indians and the army uses their language to communicate on the battlefield. im not sure if this will ring any bells but near the end the main indian guy is walking and this guy with a bayonette comes to stab him in the back and the indian pulls a sword out and chops the guys head off. also when they go to sleep the indian do a ritual that is supposed to bless all the men and keep them from dying. i think the movie is like "winds of ____" and i cant think of whats after.
thx

I would like to ask this question in this section as I think you guys as Vietnamese often come in here so I just want to keep it to a narrow group to discuss.
I have seen recently a number of Vietnamese who I believe the new comers from Vietnam in California. I can tell by the way they behave, talk and dress. What bothers me the most is that they are extremely loud in the public! I see them in stores, shopping malls, markets and they talk so freaking loud without respecting the surroundings. Why do they do that? Aren't they supposed to learn the culture before they arrive? The Chinese people are the same. They walk and talk on the phone like they want everyone in the mall to hear what they are saying. They probably live in a crowded environment and all the motobikes, cars honking so loud and constantly and they have to talk loud so people can hear? If you ever encounter one or some people as I describe you know what I mean.

Go to Vietnam or Not?

Hi! I am Vietnamese, born in the US. I have a tutor growing up and can read very little and speak the language with a horrible accent. (But, I try...) So, growing up, my parents went back to Vietnam and discouraged us children from going. I have always had a desire to visit when I finish graduate school, but my parents, particularly my mother has said some horrible things about Vietnam:
1. It's dirty. So, I looked up an article and read an article about people defecating on the side of the roads! She said the sanitation is horrible.
2. Crime. She said if I were to ever visit, I may be a victim or the frequent rape, burglary, etc.
3. She said that the living conditions are intolerable and that I would not enjoy my stay.
4. She always talks about the supernatural and superstitions in Vietnam. It's very creepy, yet annoying because I would not enjoy it if the majority's mentality was this way.
5. Dress. She said some people dress very inappropriate, even go topless or revealing their private areas, which I feel is inappropriate.
6. She said that I would not like the customs of the Vietnamese people and that they have poor manners, and will burp, fart etc in public areas.
Are these things neccessarily true? I surely hope not. I want to visit my extended family and grandparents (I have not seen them in over 12 years.) Any input is greatly appreciated.
