I'm just curious if an dating relationship or an long term marriage relationship could actually work out if you married someone from outside your culture. Say like, if i married an Chinese girl and i am Vietnamese would it actually work out for the both of us ? That would mean that she and i have to speak to each other in English because we can't speak other languages. Do any of you guys think a marriage or an relationship could work out if you get into a relationship with someone outside your culture ?

I'm learning Portuguese and I'm pretty far with that already. I'm intermediate level.
I recently took up German in order to ready myself for when I take it in school next year.
Me and my friend have a competition for who learns Vietnamese fastest.
And I was think about starting to study French as I get bored when I can't find anyone to talk to in the other languages.

Is this too hard to do, or is it possible?
Thanks. :)

question to vietnamese people?

Okay I was the other days at a nail salon (yes, I'm metro) and while I was talking to the girl taking care of me I asked her about whether the capital of VietNam was either Hanoi or Saigon. Trying to keep the conversation going. She shook her head when I mentioned Hanoi and emphatically responded with Saigon. Then she began talking with other employees in Vietnamese and next thing I know they're gathered around her. While I don't understand the language, I did pick up the words, Hanoi, Saigon, and Ho Chi Minh. It's not like they appeared angry or anything but I sorta perceived they might've been making fun of me among themselves. So for my question, was the question I asked considered offensive or rude or whatnot among the Vietnamese population? And second, just out of curiosity, what could they've been saying about me?
okay in concern to the last answerer, I was under the impression that they were making fun of me b/c of the tone they were speaking in and certain gestures they were making. I speak 2 other languages besides English and lived the first 14 years of my life in a country that was not the US

Do you know there are more Vietnamese native speakers (people who speak Vietnamese as their mother tongue) than there are French, German or Italian native speakers? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_number_of_native_speakers

Do you also know Vietnam is larger than Great Britain, Italy and Korea (North and South Korea combined)? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_outlying_territories_by_total_area

Do you know that there are more Vietnamese than there are Englishmen, Frenchmen, Germans , Italians or Koreans? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_population

So why are many people (including many Vietnamese) still referring to Vietnam as a tiny country when it's bigger and more populated than many major world powers? Are they ill-informed (for most non-Vietnamese) or having an inferiority complex (for most Vietnamese) or both?

Hi,

I live in Canada. My native language is Vietnamese. I was brought up to speak english. So my second language would be english. I'm currently learning Japanese and have been for about a year. Now, because I live in Canada, I also want to learn to speak french, is it a good idea to start learning 2 languages that are totally different at the same time?

Hi guys, I am looking for part-time job. I am currently live in Houston (Sugar Land) TX and a HCC student in Stafford area. I can speak four languages: Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese and English. I have applied many places, but no luck.. One thing suck is when I am finished interview with manager or interviewer, he/she told me that he/she would call me few days later.. Until now (1-2 weeks already), I didn't get their call yet.. I am desperated and looking for part-time job like cashier, server, waiter, office job or any other available job if they train me. The only job I have worked is office clerk, which is from summer job program for student when I was still in high school..
If you have know some where else is hiring or some trick to get hired, or you are hiring/have some opening job, let me know. Thanks.

thanks for your answers, I'm bored.
southernCowGirl---I can't speak any of those languages fluently. I've just tried to teach them to myself. I know a little of each, though.

I am half chinese & vietnamese and i can speak in both mandarin & cantonese and everytime when i hangout with my friends who are 100 % vietnamese they say that i'm so lucky to know four languages which is english, vietnamese, cantonese & mandarin and they literally asked me to teach them chinese. They also said it is possibly that i'm the only vietnamese who is half chinese, is this true ?? Because so far as i know in my town there is no one else who is half chinese. Are there any one you vietnamese ladies or guys who are half chinese or half of any other culture ?? Please tell me i'm just curious !

I am Vietnamese and I also am Chinese but do both cultures but I am usually unaware of what culture I am doing, like new years, food offering, etc.

Do you think some Vietnamese look chinese.? I have pale skin and monolids with dark black hair.
Sadly, I encountered a couple of people who I thought were Chinese so I spoke to them in Chinese but they were Vietnamese. Thoroughly embarrassing, I must say. Can you please tell me about it's history, cultures, language , and similarity? I know there are a lot of Vietnamese words similar to Chinese can you list some?

& about the facial features, correct me if I am wrong, but why do people say Vietnamese have dark skin??? That is not true! It all depends on where Viets live. People further down south most likely have tanner skin becuase of the sun, but people in the cities and sometimes the North, have a majority of lighter skin. Chinese people can also have darker skin. Where I live in Vietnam, there are a LOT of Chinese/Korean people who can speak the languages.
Please do not be bashful and please give out good information

How many languages can you speak?

Just curious how many languages can you speak at your age? & What's your ethnicity?

what is miao language?

Hmong (RPA: Hmoob) or Mong (RPA: Moob) is the common name for a group of dialects of the West Hmongic (Chuanqiandian) branch of the Hmong-Mien/Miao-Yao language family spoken by the Hmong people of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, northern Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos.[2] The total number of speakers worldwide has been estimated to be more than 4 million, including over 200,000 Hmong Americans.[1] Some dialects are mutually intelligible while others are so distinct as to be considered separate languages

Africans or African Americans. Some of the Asians are 4th and 5th Generations and they do not speak Chinese, Japanese Korean, Vietnamese, Thai or any of the other languages from Asia. But you refuse to give people of African descent the same level of respect. Why is that? Are you Racist or what?
FYI, Many Chinese Families have been here since the 1870s when the Railroads were being built.

How are white people stereotyped in East Asia?

And if an east Asian knows no white peroson language except the names of places and people, what do they think the languages sound like? Please no answers from Mainland China, North Korea, laos, or Vietnam because those countries are totalitarianist.

Vietnamese Language?

Me and my wife are from New Orleans and plan to move back in a couple of years. I am starting Pre-Med this fall and want to start learning other languages. New Orleans has a large Vietnamese community, so my goal is to learn Vietnamese down the road because most people that speak a second language in the United States speak either Spanish or French. I want to be different.
None of the colleges I am prospecting teaches Vietnamese, but one of them offers Japanese and Chinese (Manderin).
Personally I am more interested in Japanese, as I am infatuated by their culture and would love to at visit Japan a few times.
But if my ultimate goal is Vietnamese, would either language help me more with Vietnamese? Maybe one is more similar in linguistics, word roots, or characters.
And if anyone happens to have any tips it would be helpful. I have wanted to at least pick up a second language for a while, but my goal is to also look good to a Medical School and/or Hospital.

I want to find books written in these languages so I can study and practice the language outside of a classroom/textbook setting. Where might I be able to find these sorts of books? I'm thinking something along the lines of simple-ish stories, but not necessarily children's books.

i speak 11 languages.
english, spanish, polish, french, vietnamese, german, korean, german, finnish, italian, and russian.
sorry, i meant to put chinese. i dont know how i got the two mixed up, but i did. oh well, who really gives a shit.
how is that funny?

I want to learn other languages starting with the Vietnamese language. Anyone willing to help me I would sure appreciate it. Please be my teacher. Thanks :)

Ehhh im jus Wonderin Because I don't know what my name means in those languages and im Asian and speak those languages

My boyfriend speaks Vietnamese, and yesterday he said to me in Vietnamese what he said translated to "I like you very much." I know what some of the words are, but I'm trying to figure out the others, just out of curiosity, so I know what they look like written. He doesn't know how to spell most of the words, so he can't really help me there.

I know 3 of the 5 words already.

He said:
Anh (---1---) em quá (---2---)

the first missing word sounds kind of like it would be spelled like "quai" (like kwai, rhyming with 'high'). I'm not sure what the tone on it is.

the second missing word sounded almost exactly like the word "chơi" (to play), but it sounded like the tone was lower.

He also speaks with a Southern Vietnamese pronunciation, he says, if that helps

I'm a real geek when it comes to languages, so I'd love to be able to figure this out.

And explain the relationship between these languages ,such as korean,Japanese,Mandarin,Cantonese,Shanghai dialect,Vietnamese language ,tibet langue.
As for pronunciation, Since I know a little Japanese, I find Japanese is very similar to Shanghai dialect, and Cantonese is similar to vietnam language. Tibet language is very simlar to north Chinese.while korean is very different, i haven't find a similarity, in fact it quiet different from all other lanages, there are all monosyllabic.
all these are my senses, are there a professional to answer the question?

4 year old can't speak english?

My baby brother can't speak english.
He understands well but he can't speak full sentences besides the only one I heard from him "You hurt me". He can understand english well and knows certain commands like close the door. Is there any way i can speed up the process of his english learning? Our family is Vietnamese speaking so I think he's confused between languages. Answers will be appreciated. Thanks!

Plus, he already tried playing with kids at a daycare. They say hi to him and he says hi back but that's all it is. Then he just plays by himself.

I'm a high school sophomore. I can speak Vietnamese, English, Chinese and a little Spanish. I'm gonna learn some new languages soon. I like travel a lot. I want to go everywhere all around the world, learn their cultures, see the heritages.... But I don't know what job is the best for me? My parents want me to be a dentist to have more money and then travel. I have no idea.
