Travelling to Vietnam, tips please?

In April this year I'm traveling over to Vietnam to see my Dad who works there, I'm 15 by the way if that helps. Was just wondering about things i should know about going over there, do they speak much English over there? (I'm Australian) and what are some things you recommend doing over there, apart from shopping of course! I'll be on my own a lot as my Dad will be working most in the days and its only me going to visit him. So any tips and help would be much appreciated, also any tips on some basic language I should learn would be helpful
Thanks xxx.
if it helps in staying in Ho Chi Minh city

Hi! My boyfriend and his family is from Vietnam, I am going to be meeting his parents in December and I want to be able to have a little conversation with them since his mom does not speak English and his dad is not very fluent. My boyfriend gave me some CD's and a book which are helpful but I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions for software, books, etc. that will help me. I am having a little trouble pronouncing and with the marks over and under the letters... :S. Thank you in advance.

hiii. so today im meeting my boyfriend's Vietnamese family. Hes half Mexican and half Vietnamese so im only meeting his dad's side of the family today. Im so nervous and I was wondering if anyone has some tips or advice! His dad and grandma and uncle and aunt are gonna be there. and they dont really speak english. This is really awkward for me since im Hispanic and im afraid they wont like me because of that. any advice would really help! THANKS :D

a couple years ago my dad rented this war movie on vietnam from netflix. its about apachi indians and the army uses their language to communicate on the battlefield. im not sure if this will ring any bells but near the end the main indian guy is walking and this guy with a bayonette comes to stab him in the back and the indian pulls a sword out and chops the guys head off. also when they go to sleep the indian do a ritual that is supposed to bless all the men and keep them from dying. i think the movie is like "winds of ____" and i cant think of whats after.
thx

My parents and I often have communication error. I speak a lot of English while he speaks mainly Vietnamese and I might as well ask here than ask him for the time being. My dad says he only has the 2008 W-2 at the moment. Should he have anything else that I should be using? He didn't file the 2008 W-2 yet, if that helps. I need help at this, I am extremely newb at this, provide me with lots of information please!

obvisiously, most white people can't tell the difference between Asians.

that is why I only wanted to ask Asian people specifically Vietnamese.

Ok so my dad knows a vietnamese man who can speak chinese very well. But he is not a Wah Kiu (Chinese person with Vietnamese nationality). Anyways he told us that 31 years ago, he came to America by boat from Thailand. Do vietnamese people still come by boat today, and why does he had to go to Thailand to take a boat to America?

I just need a list of books for my dad. he is around 40 years old and is bored a lot. He used to be a history teacher so anything about history is well appreciated.
Thanks!

My dad is from Saigon and left during the war (c. 1973). To my knowledge he is the only family member to come over to the US. I've been trying for years to find agencies or web pages that I could search for family I've never met. It's been years since my dad spoke to or seen his family & I would love to meet that other 1/2 of myself! Are there any good places to look or try, other than going to Vietnam and asking people there???

Ohkay so, both of my parents were born in Vietnam but my mom was suppose to be born in China but her family had to move to Vietnam because of the war or something and my dad was just... naturally born in Vietnam. Both my parents grew up in Vietnam, but both of them can speak fluent Vietnamese AND Chinese. My last name is Chinese though.

Please help me understand about vietnam war?

I have a friend who's in her mid 40's, her mother and sisters and self were brought to the U.S. when she was 8 years old through a program to help her escape the war. She was able to read and write but now she can't speak or anything Vietnamese. Her mother had to put her in an orphanage in the U.S. so she could work then she would take the kids, my friend included, on the weekend. Her dad was a prisoner of war for 10 years, they thought he was dead so the mother remarried an american. She can't remember anything about Vietnam, or the language. I don't understand why, what was it like there at that time for the Vietnamese? I think she was in a city.
I don't need the war explained. I understand the war. I'm looking for information about the vietnamese experience as a child there, in a city at the time my friend would have been there.

Vietnamese Frustration!?

I'm Vietnamese. Full-blooded; my whole entire family is Vietnamese. My dad immigrated to the U.S on a boat when he was 14! So why can't I speak Vietnamese no matter how hard I try to learn? I can understand it perfectly! My parents speak to me in Vietnamese all the time...but I respond in English. When I was 1-4 years old, I spoke Vietnamese perfectly! (Yes, I spoke fluent Vietnamese at one.) And then one day...I just stopped. I've never been able to go back since then. I've tried "teach yourself to speak Vietnamese" cds and I've asked my parents to teach me, but it doesn't stick! What gets me is that I understand it, but I can't speak it. WTH?! So can someone please tell me why this is and suggest an effective and accurate way for me to learn Vietnamese once and for all?
I'm willing to study the language. I have no problem with that. Half of my family still lives in Vietnam, and I want to be able to speak with them. DESPERATELY. I will go to any means to find a way to learn.

If you know how to speak viet, please help me!?

How do you say ______ in vietnamese.

1. My dad isnt home
2. i cant speak vietnamese.
3. wait
4. wait for my dad to come home.

HELP PLEASE

we have a 1993 honda accord and my dad can't understand the English manuals. is there a website or anything i can get online that is in vietnamese?

My Vietnamese cousin and her Albanian husband have a beautiful 2 year old daughter. She knows a few English words and combines them with baby babble.
The mom speaks vietnamese to her and the dad speaks english.
Both parents speak nearly perfect english and both speak their native languages when relatives visit(which is often).
I'm sure hearing 3 different languages in the household is playing a role in the kid's language development. I'm worried that she'll be learning a lot slower than the other kids.

How could I find where my family is in Vietnam?

Are there any Vietnam War veterans here?

What is your opinions the South Vietnamese military and its soldiers. I once had an American Vietnam War vet speak at my school. He said that most ARVN troops were mostly cowards who whenever possible would avoid combat and let the Americans fight their battles. I thought that this was kind of offensive since my dad is vet, he was in the ARVN. I served for a few years, and then was sent to a reeducation camp after the war. He told me that the ARVN fought 75% of the war. The Americans mostly defended their bases.

Where can I buy The Forbidden Kingdom dvd (with Jackie Chan and Jet Li) in a vietnamese version? My dad loves these kinds of movies and I'd love to get it for him for Xmas, but he only understands Vietnamese. Does anyone know where I can purchase the vietnamese version OR dubbed over in the vietnamese language? I really appreciate it.

Should I even take Vietnamese language lessons?

Oookay, so the thing is; my parents keep bothering me about the fact that I should take Vietnamese language lessons!
I fluently speak & understand the language, but I'm not so good at reading & writing it... I honestly don't want to take lessons on the Viet language because when I look at my future, I see myself speaking, communicating, writing, etc.. in English! My future goals in life is to be a elementary school teacher here in Washington state, where I was born. Ironically, I'd rather take piano lessons because it's also a dream of mine to learn how to play the piano but my parents disagree & tell me piano's not important in life? :P My parents also speak English but they want me to be able to read/write Vietnamese fluently... ugh. I speak English everyday & I rarely speak Vietnamese except when talking to my dad, lol.

The Vietnamese language lessons run on Sundays from 1:30 to 4... & I feel that could interfere with schoolwork and since I'm in high school, I have tons of hw that I can't finish in one day! :\ I really really don't wanna do it, but I need your opinions. Sorry if I sound like a spoiled brat or something, haha (:
@GreatVanilla,
wtf -.-
