im viet and i love the lanuage of those countries. do you think it will take me long to learn them. i heard chinese controlled vietnam for 1000 years so will the lanuage be similar to china or at least will i be able to pronounce it well??

I know that my history comes from trieu chau, so that might narrow down the surname a bit. I'm vietnamese, but my ancestors came from china so I'm trying to touch base with my roots. Thanks ahead of time for the help.

I'd just like to know how well the International students from China or Vietnam know English when they come to America to go to college? Are they able to have a comfortable conversation with someone who is very fluent in English? Don't all international students have to take a language test before they can attend an American university? Does this language test just test the basics of the English language? I'd really like to know. Thanks!

So I'm Vietnamese,my ancestors came from China, and it's really a shame that I can't speak Chinese. That's why I decided to take Mandarin Chinese in school next year. But I just wondering, will it be easy for me to learn Chinese more than people who are foreigners?

Ohkay so, both of my parents were born in Vietnam but my mom was suppose to be born in China but her family had to move to Vietnam because of the war or something and my dad was just... naturally born in Vietnam. Both my parents grew up in Vietnam, but both of them can speak fluent Vietnamese AND Chinese. My last name is Chinese though.
I was born in Canada.

I have read in some articles that he was born in Vietnam, and in other articles they say he was born in China. I'm just curious to know which Asian community will do the mourning. It is interesting because Henry Lee faced the exact same obstacles as Cho (both were Asians learning a new language, culture, ect). But Lee did not become a raving lunatic bent on revenge. Instead, Henry Lee was a real winner, exactly the opposite of Cho.

Should I just change my ethnicity to Vietnamese?

When people ask me where my parents are from, I say Vietnam but that we're Chinese though. From my appearance, many people guess Vietnamese and I have to go through the same explanation again haha.

My parents can speak Vietnamese but I can only speak Cantonese and Mandarin besides English. I do have an ear for identifying Vietnamese but that's about it. My household eats Chinese and Vietnamese food. I know quite a number of Vietnamese dishes and very little of the Vietnamese language. I plan to learn Vietnamese not too far in the future. My parents express a desire to visit Vietnam again but nothing about China.

I don't have any relatives that work in a nail salon or laundromat.. haha so what do you think I should identify as?
I was born in the U.S.

Since the fall of China's first dynastic empire (Qin Dynasty) the Chinese conquered what is now Vietnam during the Han Dynasty in the 200BCs and ruled for over 1,000 years. Given this timeframe, one would expect the Chinese to totally assimilate them. Yet, Vietnam is independent today and the Vietnamese language remains intact. They only borrowed the benefits of Chinese civilization/culture. But, the Chinese had never made the attempt to eradicate and assimilate them totally. The northern part of Korea was also under the rule of the Han Dynasty for over 400 years and they too later got independent and threw off Chinese rule. This is proof that the Chinese never had desires to rule the world as envisioned in the collective Western physche and mind.

I feel shamed to ask "Do you know Thailand ?" I am Thai. I found that Vietnamese and Indonesia language are available in Google translation machine but Thai. I think in South East Asia several countries such as Laos Cambodia Singapore Myanmar Vietnam Malaysia and China support studying Thai language. However, There are not much programs to promote study Thai or other applications for instance translation, dictionary, reading machine or OCR.
When I register the websites, they want me to inform the language but there is no Thai provided. What happened? Maybe my language is a minority of world language use.

I know there are many little areas in DC that claim to be China-esque or Vietnamese-esque. but I was talking to some friends who say that there is only one specific spot that is the best for shopping and the culture.

Any ideas?

Originally, Vietnam had its own distinct written language which began in the 13th century.

However, when the French Colony came into Vietnam, their culture heavily influenced Vietnamese written language, thus it became popular and the original became less.

So does anyone have any links that show this original written language? I have never seen it and am interested.

According to wikipedia, the writings looked that of Japan or China, but of course it was different in its own way.
