The Vietnamese Language!!?

I know there are different ways to say different words in vietnamese, but i want to know is there a more common way of speaking?
Like in Chinese, it's not really Chinese.. the most common is Mandarin.
if there is a more common way in Vietnamese, Please tell me because i'd really like the learn the most common form of it. ^_^

P.S.
I don't need anyone to tell me it's too hard.. I've already learn some words and can say them without hesitation including an accent.

Learning Vietnamese .. Pimsleur?

Hi guys. I've decided to commit myself to learning Vietnamese from scratch with no background at all (it's part of my ethnicity and as a long term goal, I want to be able to be proficiently fluent in it in both writing and speaking).

So I was wondering if there was a good place to start. I've already ordered a highly recommended grammar book that is being shipped this very moment but I want to look into a resource that'll help with my speaking since there's no way I'm going to make heads or tails of what the accent markings will sound like if I just read the grammar book.

I've heard good things from Pimsleur's language courses. The only problem I have is that it is completely audio, isn't it? Sure I can repeat whatever they tell me to say but how am I supposed to relate that to what's written? It's not like I'll be able to figure out that a certain sound will correspond to a certain accented letter without actually having a script to follow a long.

Maybe my understanding of how Pimsleur isn't quite right.. But anyway, any advice for resources to learn Vietnamese both spoken and written? It'd be nice to find something that can match audio to something written. Not sure if Pimsleur does that or not .. Any comments would be appreciated!

Go to Vietnam or Not?

Hi! I am Vietnamese, born in the US. I have a tutor growing up and can read very little and speak the language with a horrible accent. (But, I try...) So, growing up, my parents went back to Vietnam and discouraged us children from going. I have always had a desire to visit when I finish graduate school, but my parents, particularly my mother has said some horrible things about Vietnam:
1. It's dirty. So, I looked up an article and read an article about people defecating on the side of the roads! She said the sanitation is horrible.
2. Crime. She said if I were to ever visit, I may be a victim or the frequent rape, burglary, etc.
3. She said that the living conditions are intolerable and that I would not enjoy my stay.
4. She always talks about the supernatural and superstitions in Vietnam. It's very creepy, yet annoying because I would not enjoy it if the majority's mentality was this way.
5. Dress. She said some people dress very inappropriate, even go topless or revealing their private areas, which I feel is inappropriate.
6. She said that I would not like the customs of the Vietnamese people and that they have poor manners, and will burp, fart etc in public areas.
Are these things neccessarily true? I surely hope not. I want to visit my extended family and grandparents (I have not seen them in over 12 years.) Any input is greatly appreciated.

How to get rid of my heavy Asian accent?

I just moved to the US for 4 months, and yea ... I'm Vietnamese, Asian and my accent is so heavy that everyone laugh at me a lot, they always grimace at me whenever I talk to them. I'm 17 now and really wanna get rid of my accent, or at least make it fade away. Anyone knows how long it takes?

Vietnamese Accent Trouble ?

Okay, I'm not Vietnamese, but my best friend is and she's been teaching me Vietnamese. I really enjoy it, but she says that I don't have the right accent. I try speaking Vietnamese to her family and they can kind of understand me, but I want to get better. When she pronounces it the right way, it sounds the same as my way.. But I don't get it ? Mine and her sound very much alike ! Is there anyway I can improve my accent on Vietnamese ? Or is it just something you're naturally born with ? (Btw, my friend was born in Vietname) No rude or stupid answers please. (:
I do ask my friend what's wrong, but she just says "Ugh ! You're just not saying ikt right ! I don't know how but you're just not saying it right." So I'm like, "Uhmm.. Okay ?" So yeah, she's not being the biggest help in the world. I ask her "Yeah, but WHAT am I saying wrong ?" And she says "I don't know ? You're just saying it wrong." And I didn't mean to put the 'e' at the end of Viet Nam. I was in a hurry. Sorry.

I am just curious bc I am am african american woman and I have had 3 Asian Guys who have wanted to date me. All three of them have been Vietnamese Men,
Out of curiosity are the Vietnamese more tolerate towards interracial dating than other types of Asians. Also what are Vietnamese Men like, especially when it comes to culture and what not? Do they prefer the traditional lifestyle in which woman stays at home, man works? Do they marry early. I am just trying to find out some basic information about Vietnamese Culture.

I also know that this guy who likes me is 23 and he has been over in the States for quite some time, however he does still have an accent and speak Vietnamese. He told me in Vietnam how lighter skin is prized versus a darker complexion, however he always tells me how beautiful my color is and jokingly said that we'd make some cute 'blasian babies, haha
i have not been with them at all. They just wanted to date me.
I am actually 21 and still a virgin and have great morals, so none of them have used me, but they have been attracted to me and wanted to pursue me. The most recent guy also was engaged to his EX who was a black woman. So no they do not always go back to their roots so to speak.

Im Vietnamese but people think i’m Chinese?

ever since i was little. i have really black hair and they say like im the grudge. i live in the US and i don't have an accent. i was born here and raised here. I know how to speak both language and alot of people at my church that was born here don't know how to. i speak vietnamese with my parents and english when i go out to school and when i talk to my sister and brothers. what do i say when they ask me if i'm Chinese? I don't want to tell them what my race is. I'm not ashamed but then they ask alot of questions and stuff. i usually say im Asian b/c i am then they just don't say anything. i have a Lao algebra teacher and some girl said i looked like her i felt really offended b/c they thought she was my mom when we don't have the same last name.

I just think it's very odd that thus far I have only had Vietnamese Asians attempt to date me, which leads me to think that the Vietnamese are more likely to date oustide their race.
wow, well maybe asian (vietnamese) are just attracted to me.

How to learn Vietnamese, Southern dialect?

So the Rosetta Stone has a good program, but it's in a Northern Dialect. As most of the Vietnamese in the USA are of Southern dialect (my fiance's family included), is there any good alternative to start with for the southern dialect? Is the difference that great? I just know when her family meets a northern speaker, they do not understand them well at all. It's worse than like a boston and deep south accent difference by comparison. Thanks.

How to speak Chinese with a Taiwanese accent?

I'm meeting my boyfriend's parents who prefer a girl who can speak Mandarin, so I'm trying to learn some basic phrases (hello aunty, how are you, etc) I'm Vietnamese and 1/4 Chinese, though I speak neither languages.

My Taiwanese friends have been coaching me but I'm still having trouble maintaining the accent.. any how to videos or something?

I'm an American born Vietnamese. I have no accent when I speak in English and I don't know how to speak Vietnamese at home.

My parents never taught us to speak Vietnamese. I can somewhat understand Vietnamese but never speak it. I can only say basic stuff like "Ma" and "Ba". Mother and father.

Am I the only one here and is it common?

I need words of encouragement.

Helen Lopez, a young beautiful lovely Mexican lady, who is married to a Vietnamese male singer whom has taught her to sing and talk in Vietnamese!

I'm so amazed by her Vietnamese accent and her singing ability in Vietnamese. She even picks up the native Vietnamese accent as well.

Here is one of her clip!

@ Liên:

I will support you no matter what! Will you sing for me someday, dear?

I'd love to hear your voice!

I am Vietnamese, my husband is Korean, we communicate both in Korean and English. I want to talk to my little son both in Vietnamese and English, but i prefer speaking E to him, because learning E in Korean will spend a lot of money in Korea. I speak E with strong accent and sometimes i speak in incorrect grammar and incorrect pronunciation, i afraid that i teach my son informal and incorrect E. But i really want to teach him E. Tell me your advice, guys. Thanks so much
