Hello, how are you? Compared to Chinese, Vietnamese is similar in speaking. Both have use the tonal system which uses four tones. Reading and writing are WAY different as Chinese uses those symbols and Vietnamese uses Roman letters like French. This is because both China and French have influenced the language. China is the north neighbour and the French colonized Vietnam for a while. If you want to learn Vietnamese, it’s best to have a fluent person to help you. Also, learn the North Vietnamese dialect which has no accent. Personally for me, it’s hard for me to understand people from middle or south Vietnam. Good luck.

I’ve seen a lot of little vietnamese children speaking it, so it can’t be that hard to learn.

I learned some Vietnamese quickly when a Viet girl wanted me to call her, and her mother spoke no English or French. I took 2.5 years of Chinese in college and lived in Chinatown San Francisco for years. Vietnamese is similar to Chinese, so I can learn it quickly. It uses Roman letters, as English does, so it is much easier to learn Viet writing than Chinese and Japanese.

There’s this one vietnamese singer, Dalena, who’s American and she says that she learned chinese when she was little and because of that she was able to have an "asian accent" that enabled her to speak proper vietnamese and become the singer that she is today.

Most people would say vietnamese is a hard language to learn because the accent is so heavy. I don’t think it’s too difficult to learn but then I think it’s really difficult to speak it properly and fluently.
