I am traveling to Washington DC this Wednesday. Where is the best ‘china town’ or ‘Vietnamese town’?

I know there are many little areas in DC that claim to be China-esque or Vietnamese-esque. but I was talking to some friends who say that there is only one specific spot that is the best for shopping and the culture.

Any ideas?

DC’s Chinatown is not exactly authentic. It’s very commercial with the sports arena (Verizon Center) and many chain stores and restaurants. There are a few Chinese restaurants but they’re not really that special, and I don’t know of any Chinese or Vietnamese stores.

Much of the East Asian community actually lives outside the city in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs, especially Rockville and Tyson’s Corner. Having said that, there’s not really any single area in either place that’s particularly concentrated with Chinese or Vietnamese shops; they tend to be scattered around.

    600 block of H St. N.W. (Chinatown)

I agree with Adam. The so-called Chinatown area of Washington DC is pretty lame. The few asian restaraunts you find there are nothing special.

Chinatown? You have to go to San Francisco for that.

There is an area legitimately called Chinatown (a few blocks around 6th and H) but it’s not authentic, culturally. Although if you like shopping, there is an Urban Outfitters and a Bed, Bath, and Beyond. There isn’t really an area like what you’re looking for in DC.
