How much French is spoken in Vietnam?

It is now 53 years since it ceased to be a French colony. Are there residual pockets of the language there? Is there a use for the language?

I do agree with Kajmal and Viet …
I am Native French and traveled Vietnam twice there are some older people who do speak French but they are few a lot more people do speak English.
English is more common than French. I have used French with middle-aged officials and older people (who studied it) but most often I speak English with folks.
There is a use for the language, and some young people are studying it. But English is much more common.

That is cool. A thumbs down for reporting what I see. Hum, I didn’t know bush knew how to use a computer!
Other French words that are in tieng Viet
banh gatoo (fancy western-style cakes)
o to – car
pin – battery
phomat – cheese
bo – butter
and no doubt many, many more!
Only very few, very old Vietnamese still speak french. English far outweighs it as a second language.
Hey, I’m Vietnamese and I know that we were once a French colony, very little of the mother language is spoken in Vietnam nowadays. Only some French residents or some Vietnamese who want to learn it, know it. There is a news program ‘Le journal’ on tv aswell. Besides that and the fact many French words have entered mainstream Vietnamese in words like:
Ca vat – cravate – tie
Se cua – secours – backup
Dam – dâme – dame
Ga – Gare – train station
Besides that, very little is still spoken.
Hope that helps
