Your friend’s parents probably came from Cho Lon. Cho Lon is a Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City and is probably the largest Chinese community outside of China, Taiwan or Singapore. I have a friend of mine who was born in Saigon, but lived in Cho Lon until her parents and herself refugee to America. Her parents are Chinese decent, and her family spoke only Cantonese despite living in the middle of Saigon. Chinese is widely spoken over Vietnamese in Cho Lon even to this day.
