If you want to learn how to read Japanese, you will have to memorize Katakana, Hiragana and somewhere along the line aim for the most important kanji.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katakana
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiragana
A lot of people are able to learn hiragana in just a few weeks by writing the symbols on flashcards. Katakana is a lot harder (in my opinion) because all the symbols look alike. However thankfuly the way the alphabet is organized, Hiragana and Katakana are similar in that aspect.
Foreign language phrases like Merry Christmas are usually written as you read them in english using katakana.
Good Morning! Ohayou!
Hello! Konnichiwa!
Good Night! Gonban! or Oyasumi!
How are you? O genki desu ka?
What’s your breakfast? Asagohan wo ka? (not fully sure if this one is correct)
Uhh.. I’ll let someone with better Japanese than my own answer the other ones. ^^’
