Should I learn Thai or Vietnamese?

I have to learn a Southeast Asian language, either Thai or Vietnamese. There seems to be more Vietnamese people in my area (the US) and around the world in general, and the language has a simpler writing system. Thai however looks and sounds more beautiful to me (that is of course subjective), and the country is more developed than Vietnam. Difficulty isn't really an issue for me, I'm a translator already. I'm more interested in usefulness and perks of knowing either language I may not be aware of (rich literary tradition, openness of people to foreigners learning the language etc). So with the question of difficulty aside, which would you recommend and why? Which do you think is more useful to learn? Funner to learn? Thanks!!

Somewhere NOT Vietnamese because they always expect me to speak vietnamese. But I don't understand/speak it well at all...And maybe around 20 dollars or less?

Such as Japan, Thailand, SIngapore and Vietnam, where people don't speak Korean?

Confuse with Algebric Vocabulary!?

I am studying English and I have some confusing in my Algebra Vocabulary, such as:

the "defined condition" of √A is A >=0, (the word "defined condition" is the translation of my language (Vietnamese) "điều kiện xác định" but I don't know exactly the word "defined condition" in Math vocabulary, can anyone show me?

And √A, how do you read it in English (can you write down for me? Is that square root A or...)

Also example:: (x+3)*(2/3x+5) and |x - 2008| how do you read these expression in English?

I am an ESL learner so if I write something wrong, I hope you appreciate and understand my words!!!!
Thanks!

In Viet Nam <---this is how the way we write doesn't matter in English or in Viet, but everytimes my teacher and other people keep write Vietnam at one word. Viet mean Vietnamese people and Nam mean South they are completely different meaning.

And would this be a good career choice?
What are the requirements, and amount of school needed? Is there anything that I will need to study in college/high school?
I can communicate well, speak three languages. English/Vietnamese/French.
What are the earnings and salary? any risks?
I love travel, and I want to work with Vietnam Airlines. It doesn't really matter, I just like the idea. Thank you for answering.

John Slattery was drafted when he was only 20 years old. He is currently 64 years old, living in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has been teaching the English language to children and adults for most of his life in many different countries and all through out the United States. John was stationed in Chu Lai, Vietnam when in combat.

When the U.S. went to war with Vietnam, they wanted to stop the spread of communism. The domino theory was taking over parts of Europe and Asia. John commented, “It was feared that if North Vietnam were to win, then the communist government that came to power there would use overt and covert means to make other, neighboring countries in Southeast Asia communist-led, as well.” In 1963, John was drafted and entered the Vietnam War. In the beginning, he thought people in Washington state were confident with what they were doing, but after a brief time in Vietnam, he understood that the Vietnamese were strongly opposed to the intrusion. “I started thinking that, after all, they had the right to decide their own form of government and that we really had no business being there.” America did not belong in Vietnam. Many soldiers, like John, were impacted by the war in both good and bad ways for many years. The war did not just affect our soldiers in a physical way, but mentally. What those brave people saw at war “scared” them for life. John quoted, “I drank heavily for a long time afterward and bummed around with no direction and no ambition for about five years, and I had what I guess would be called a "nervous breakdown." The healing process took quite awhile, but eventually some good came out of it. Thanks to what I'd done there and what happened to me afterwards, I gradually realized that we're all a part of one another, that when we hurt someone else, we hurt ourselves as well, and when we help another, we are helped, too.” The Vietnam War changed John’s life in a positive way too. “It changed the way I look at the world and at my fellow humans, and I think it made me a better person.”

The most abrupt effect of the Vietnam War on the U.S. was the death toll of Americans. The war took about 58,000 American lives and left tens of thousands wounded. The war also killed hundreds of thousands of the innocent Vietnamese. John stated, “I think it may have been the end of innocence for many of us.” Prior to the war, the majority of people trusted the U.S. government and fully supported the information they were given. After the tragic war, several people were uneasy and questioned the actions and views of those in power. John is not so sure whether the Vietnam War had a great impact on the world. “Who can say how the world might be different today if what happened to them had never taken place? Chaos theory helps explain why answering this is impossible. Everything’s connected-the beating of a butterfly’s wings in the Brazilian rain forest can cause a hurricane in Florida. There are simply way too many variables involved to let anyone say how the world was affected.” John believes the U.S. should be neither praised nor condemned. He feels that we should not have gone to war. Policymakers truly believed they were right, when they were really not doing the right thing. Too many people died and there was not much accomplished for the greater good. America was “defeated” because of the unusual strategy the Vietnamese used which was called Guerrilla warfare. Guerilla warfare is an alternative method of war which small groups of soldiers try to use surprise tactics (ambushes, raids) to conquer an enemy.

After interviewing John Slattery, it seems that America did not belong in Vietnam. There were no winners, only losers. Many soldiers and civilians lost their lives or were wounded in combat. Some soldiers were emotionally depressed from what they saw in combat. America got into the war to prevent the spread of communism but was not ready or equipped to take on their upcoming challenges. America was not prepared for battle. As communism spread like a disease, people started to panic about who to trust. The official government strategy was questioned, and doubted, while some worried about communist thoughts and sympathies. In the end, communism spread to South Vietnam, uniting the North and South as one sovereign country.

I have this friend named Steve and he always insults me simon cowell style whenever I talk about my upcoming marriage to this vietnamese girl. Everytime when I say I'm excited to go meet this vietnamese girl in vietnam who my aunt is introducing me to, he says you should be excited about your upcoming divorce. He says your a big sissy who can't get a girl so you get your momma to get you a girl, no girl wants to be with a guy like that. He also says you will cry so much when she leaves you that you will drown and sink like a ship. I told him that this is normal in the vietnamese culture and most girls from vietnam are faithful and they stay married with you no matter what income you make, low or high. I told him that vietnamese girls in vietnam are taught by their parents to get married once only. He says you're better off becoming a prostitute or a hooker because they make good money and all you want from this vietnamese girl is sex and nothing else. This is true and I'm wondering why he insults me like this ?? I know he is copying simon cowell's style of insults.

I stay in Nha Trang Most of the time, I have brown hair and eyes... I weigh 70 lbs. my hair is to my chest.

It won't interfere with my education, i plan to go to college and be a game developer for jagex.

I would like to learn Vietnamese and Gaelic in college, but I can't find any.

I heard it this morning on NPR. He was speaking out against the Vietnam War, and as his #1 reason for opposition to the war, he quoted the 6th commandment as, "Thou shalt not kill." Actually, the commandment says, "Thou shalt not murder" (the Hebrew word is "ratsah", which is an unjustified criminal act of killing - that's the word used in the commandment). The Bible does not take such a stand against justified killings (e.g., combat, capital punishment, etc.), so Dr. King was clearly wrong on this. If the news networks are going to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Day by playing soung bites from his speeches, shouldn't they play clips that bolster his image rather than display his ignorance?

I know there are some marks that may not be able to be sent so here is my email address. luvcra@yahoo.com thank you so much if you can help.

Vietnam Military Medals?

I am looking for CURRENTLY issued medals of the Vietnamese military. NOT medals issued to US or ARVN troops during the Vietnam War. I am looking for an english-language site that shows medals/decorations that are CURRENTLY issued to Vietnamese troops, by Vietnam.

Every time I try to search on Google or Yahoo, I end up getting 1000 pages of medals issued to US troops during the Vietnam War, or stuff about US involvement in Vietnam, but this is NOT what I am looking for. ONLY medals that the CURRENT Vietnamese government issues to soldiers NOWADAYS. Does anyone know of a site that has this? Can anyone please help me out?

Thank you in advance.

english-vietnamese translation?

Everyone wants to be the sun that lights up your life. But I'd rather be your moon, so I can shine on you during your darkest hour when your sun isn't around.. miss u

A better question would be why do Vietnamese youth want to be Korean and are ashamed of their roots? My cousin is exactly like this. Is it media influence? Do their parents raise them to hate the Vietnamese (the Vietnamese youth I speak of are usually U.S. citizens)? I ask because many Vietnamese people despise their government, and as a result, they despise their own people.
Many Koreans don't even like the Vietnamese because they view them as an inferior nation, let alone race of people.

i speak 11 languages.
english, spanish, polish, french, vietnamese, german, korean, german, finnish, italian, and russian.
sorry, i meant to put chinese. i dont know how i got the two mixed up, but i did. oh well, who really gives a shit.

I want to learn other languages starting with the Vietnamese language. Anyone willing to help me I would sure appreciate it. Please be my teacher. Thanks :)

He was aged between 18 & 22 in the army on the DMZ in Korea and Viet Nam. I was a little kid when he went in. I remember he brought the medals home but has refused to speak of what ever happened to earn them. I know he thought I was too young then. I'm nearly 50 and I want to know what my brother went through. His boot camp was at Fort Bragg,N.C. in 1967. He then went straight to Nam.

How to alphabetize vietnamese book titles?

I volunteered at a public library and on the application, I wrote that I was fluent in vietnamese. I forgot words in vietnamese and I don't know how to alphabetize vietnamese book titles.

I am a native English speaker, with working knowledge of Spanish. For various reasons, I have become interested in learning Korean and Vietnamese.

I am curious to gain perspective on different aspects of learning Vietnamese and Korean from people who speak and/or are learning either of these languages.

If you speak or are studying Vietnamese or Korean, feel free to share your experience/point of view on the difficulty or facility of pronunciation, grammar and/or writing system, as well as any other opinion.

I'm also wondering the advantage/functional value of either language at a professional level for work and their usefulness during travel in Asia for leisure.

Please focus your responses on these languages. Discussion of chinese is for another post, unless it serves in the consideration of the target languages.

Thanks in advance!

How do you pronounce the name Heyan Hoaug?

I have a friend name Michelle Nguyan. Her real name is Heyan Hoaug Nguyan, a name that I have trouble pronouncing correctly. She speaks very little English. I need a phonetic pronunciation of this name and/or a website that provides phonetic Vietnamese pronunciations.

Ive always felt this way but I was watching Hogan Knows Best last night (an episode ive seen before but never saw all the way through) and they moved from somwhere else in Florida, to Miami Florida a few months back. And theyre all goin out, trying to go to the gas station, and even in well known chain stores (The GNC Live Well store that sells vitamins and such) and no one spoke a lick of english...NO ONE..IN MIAMI FLORIDA! In the United States! Isnt that stupid? Terry (hulk) was tryin to buy vitamins at a store chain he always goes to and hes asking "is there some one in here who can speak english?" and the bitch knows she understood him, so he gives up and tries to work with her any ways, asking for diff types of vitamins and he says the name in english and this dumb ass is telling him no and sayin it in spanish. I dont see how he didnt loose his temper. Even in subway...she said everything in spanish asking him if he wanted it toasted or not and what he wanted on it. knowin this blonde guy doesnt speak a word in spanish. I mean sure, lots of kids take spanish in middle school and high school..and a lot of people in America population can speak enough spanish to 'get by' in mexico(even me)..so why cant they learn enough to 'get by' here?

Why is it that when/if I look in the newspaper or online at job sites half of the jobs in this valley(Funky ass Fresno, central valley ca) say bilingual preferred? Why should I learn a language other than english to get by in my country just because immigrants dont know english? And its mainly mexican/hispanics, whatever you wanna call it. Im not racist, I ahve friends of almost every back ground. but I dont see asians trying to make us learn chinese or vietnamese or anything else that they speak. Most of them do their best to learn a few basic words, and some watch tv and pick up on it like its nothing. The others who stick to their culture have a kid or some one in their family with them translate, and then they eventually pick up on it effortlessly. Its not fair and its not right.. Does the O.C. have this problem? If they do Im sure its not one fourth as bad as fresno's problem..and I cant wait to move out of here.

The way the most of these people act is sickening to me..I dont see how you can come to a country, knowing what its like, knowing that the language is something other than your own and still not make an effort to learn it so that you can talk to every one (im sure..i KNOW most of this country speaks english). Its just a total piss off..I dont know what this country is coming to..people are getting fined for flying their country's flag on their property IN the country (Donald trump included..he had his u.s. flag on some property in FL too..and they fine him a little more than 00 a day...like he cares...he can blow his nose with that..) I just dont understand Why....Why is it so hard to adapt? Why are people allowing this type of thing go on?

Why should I learn to speak spanish in my own country?

Are you with throwing the israeli ambassador out of the country at this time?

I know a girl who moved to the US from Vietnam to study abroad. I think it would help her to have others in a similar situation to talk to. If you know of any online groups for Vietnamese or even just Asian teenagers, please let me know. I would greatly appreciate it! =]

How to say this sentence in vietnamese?

It is spoken to a lady whose profession is a dancer. A greeting

Some bad language in english

Im wondering since Japanese must be very hard to learn. Which is the easiest asian language? I guess vietnamese because they dont have own symbols.

Western Europeans wrote all their texts in Latin. The Russians used old church Slavonic and Greek. The Indians used Sanskrit. East Asians(Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese) used Classical Chinese, but no one wrote and read in their native language. What was the point in writing in these very artificial languages?

I'd just like to know how well the International students from China or Vietnam know English when they come to America to go to college? Are they able to have a comfortable conversation with someone who is very fluent in English? Don't all international students have to take a language test before they can attend an American university? Does this language test just test the basics of the English language? I'd really like to know. Thanks!
